What semi-truck repairs can actually be done on the roadside?

Most breakdowns that stop a truck can be fixed where it sits: tire replacements, air-system leaks, batteries and starters, alternators, belts and hoses, coolant leaks, brake chambers and slack adjusters, wheel seals, fuel issues, most electrical faults, and many aftertreatment problems. What genuinely needs a shop is internal engine or transmission work, major driveline failures, and anything requiring a lift or press.

My truck has an air leak and won’t build pressure — is that fixable where I sit?

Accepted Answer

Usually, yes. The most common culprits — a blown air line, a leaking brake chamber, a failed dryer cartridge, a stuck purge valve, or a rotted gladhand seal — are all standard roadside fixes with parts most mobile mechanics carry. A truck that will not build air is unsafe and often illegal to drive, so this is a stop-and-fix, not a limp-to-town.

My truck won’t start — what will a mobile mechanic actually do?

Accepted Answer

No-starts split into three families, and all three are usually roadside-fixable: no crank (batteries, connections, starter), crank-but-no-fire (fuel supply, filters, gelled fuel, sensors), and computer no-start (dead ECM power, wiring). Mobile mechanics carry batteries, starters for common engines, filters, and diagnostic laptops, so most no-start calls end with the truck running, not towed.

The truck is overheating or losing coolant — should I keep driving to a shop?

Accepted Answer

No. Driving a hot diesel is the fastest way to turn a hose or radiator repair into an engine replacement — head gaskets and EGR coolers do not forgive it. Stop, shut down, and get eyes on it: most coolant-system failures (hoses, clamps, radiator leaks, water pumps, fan clutches, thermostats) are roadside repairs.

What happens after a tire blowout — and does it matter if it’s a steer or a drive?

Accepted Answer

It matters. A blown steer tire is a stop-now safety event — you should not move the truck beyond getting safely off the road, and the replacement must match the opposite steer closely. A blown drive or trailer tire on a dual set can usually be crept a short distance at low speed, but running on the mate destroys a second tire fast. Either way, a mobile tire tech brings the tire to you and has you rolling in about an hour on site.

Why does dispatch keep asking for the exact tire size?

Accepted Answer

Because the tire has to be on the service truck when it leaves the yard. The sidewall number (like 11R22.5 or 295/75R22.5) plus the position is what lets a tire tech commit to a one-trip fix. A guessed size means a second trip, and on the shoulder, a second trip is another hour or two of your day.

I don’t carry a spare — is that a problem for a roadside tire call?

Not for getting help — most road tractors don’t carry spares anymore, and mobile tire techs bring the tire with them. It mostly affects price and choice: with no spare, you’re buying whatever correct-size tire the responding tech stocks, at roadside pricing, rather than paying only for the service call to mount your own.

DEF fault has me derated (or counting down to 5 mph) — can that be fixed roadside?

Accepted Answer

Often, yes. Many DEF derates are sensor or fluid-quality faults — a failed DEF quality sensor, contaminated or crystallized DEF, a frozen or failed pump — that a mobile mechanic with OEM software can diagnose, repair, and reset on-site. The critical move is calling before the countdown corners you somewhere unsafe: a truck at 5 mph is a truck that can barely reach the shoulder.

DPF light on, truck losing power — do I need a shop for a regen problem?

Usually not for the first event. A mobile mechanic can run a forced (parked) regen with the OEM laptop, which resolves most soot-load derates in 30–60 minutes, and diagnose why passive regens stopped happening — often a sensor, a stuck EGR component, or duty cycle. Chronic repeat clogging or a filter loaded with ash does need shop cleaning or replacement.

Volt gauge dropping / batteries dying while I drive — how urgent is an alternator problem?

More urgent than it feels. Once the alternator stops charging, the truck runs down the batteries and dies — often within an hour or two, frequently in traffic, and a modern ECM-controlled diesel gets unpredictable as voltage sags. Alternator and belt replacement is a bread-and-butter roadside job; the smart move is to stop somewhere safe and have it done there.

A brake is locked up / dragging and the truck won’t move — now what?

Do not fight it with the throttle — a dragging brake gets hot enough to start fires and ruin drums fast. Locked brakes are usually a failed spring brake chamber, a frozen or contaminated valve, or (in winter) moisture frozen in the lines, and all of those are standard roadside repairs. A mechanic can be releasing it safely within the hour instead of you improvising with a caging bolt in traffic.

Wheel seal is leaking oil onto the wheel — can I finish my run first?

A wet hub is a judgment call; a dripping one is not. Gear oil reaching the brake shoes ends that wheel’s braking, and a hub running dry ends with a wheel-off — the failure mode that closes highways. Wheel seals are a routine mobile repair (the mechanic brings the seal, replaces it on-site, refills the hub), so the percentage play is fixing it where you notice it.

Yes — trailer work is a big share of roadside calls. Most breakdowns are road-fixable, a service call costs a fraction of a heavy tow, and even when the verdict is "this needs a shop," the on-site diagnosis tells you exactly where to tow it and why — so the tow you pay for is the right one.

Get the truck as far off the traveled lane as it will safely go, flashers on, triangles out at 10, 100 and 200 feet (it’s the law and it works), and stay out of the traffic side of the truck. Then note exactly where you are — mile marker, exit, direction of travel — before you make any calls. Position and location are the two things that make everything after go fast.

Yes — diesel motorhomes and diesel pushers get the same roadside mechanical service as trucks: engine, chassis, air systems, brakes, cooling, charging, tires, leveling jacks and slideout mechanisms. What’s not covered is the house side — interior systems, roof leaks, RV air conditioners and refrigerators — those are RV-shop trades, not roadside mechanics.

Three parts: a call-out fee for the mechanic to come to you (commonly in the $100–$300 range depending on distance and hour), an hourly labor rate (market rates for mobile heavy-duty work typically run $125–$250), and parts. Through RIG you see all three in each mechanic’s bid before anyone rolls — the only fixed number RIG itself charges is a $10 expedited-service deposit, applied to your final balance.

What is a call-out fee and why does every mobile mechanic charge one?

The call-out fee is the fixed charge for a mobile mechanic to bring the shop to you — it covers drive time both ways, the service truck itself, and usually the initial diagnostics. It exists because a two-hour round trip is two hours the mechanic can’t bill anywhere else. In every RIG bid the call-out fee is stated upfront, so it’s part of your comparison, not a surprise line item.

How do I pay — do you take EFS, Comchek, fleet cards?

Accepted Answer

Yes. RIG settles payment after the work is done, and takes EFS payments, WEX Express Codes, T-Chek, Comchek and standard credit/debit cards. Owner-operators pay directly; company drivers can have dispatch coordinate with their fleet office for a fuel-card code or direct payment — a normal, everyday flow on the network.

Dispatch itself is minutes — describe the breakdown once and bids typically start arriving within five to ten minutes, each with a real ETA from a mechanic who can actually roll now. Drive time depends on where you are: metro areas and major freight corridors commonly see arrivals inside an hour; deep rural stretches take longer because the mechanic is genuinely farther away. The ETA in each bid is the honest number for your exact spot.

RIG dispatches across the lower 48 states — all of them — through a network of 6,000+ mobile heavy-duty mechanics. Coverage is densest where trucks are: metro areas and the major freight corridors. We don’t currently dispatch in Canada, Mexico, Alaska or Hawaii.

What information should I have ready to get help moving fastest?

Accepted Answer

Five things: exact location (mile marker/exit or a GPS pin), what the truck is (year, make, engine), what happened in plain words, photos of anything visible, and for tire calls the sidewall size. With those, the network can bid accurately in minutes and the arriving mechanic fixes it in one trip. Missing details don’t stop dispatch — they just add clarifying round-trips while your load waits.
